Description

SONG SPARROW (Alpha code SOSP)

Song Sparrows are very adaptive birds whose range stretches contiguously from the Aleutians to the eastern US. Within that range there are 24 recognized subspecies, meaning a lot of regional variation! They can be distinguished by their clanking song, conspicuous behavior, and their streaky belly, which often has a dark spot in the middle. They are frequently preyed upon by the brown-headed cowbird, a nest parasite, but that seems to have little to no effect on overall populations.

I have the week off (spring break), so here's a simpler drawing than usual. I'm experimenting with different styles.

GOD! SO MANY subspecies! You can always tell when it's a sparrow, but if it's not one you're familiar with it's off to bird book. See the English House Sparrow quite a bit where I live...maybe I've seen this guy before? Very nice blocky style, makes me think it should be hanging in an art gallery downtown.
